Every body has its own narrative ~ whether it be in attitude or
posture, interaction with other bodies, the outer signs of inner
emotion or conscious role-playing. The body itself becomes the
repository of a story etched upon its surface by the passage of time,
thought, experience or, in some cases, art itself. It is the bearer of
its own history, shifting fortunes and eternal truths. In many
fundamental ways, it it us!
Because of this, artists have always been fascinated by the human
figure ~ studying it in all its aspects, breaking it down into its
basic volumes or studying the patterns of light and shade playing across
its flesh.
The greatest interest of an artist may not be to simply record beauty
(or lack of it) ~ but in discovering something more about the life or
condition of the model (known or unknown), or in placing them in a
setting or situation which leads to the creation of a new mode of expression.
The nude ~ or partly clothed ~ figure is often the clue, or beginning, to a much more complex story...
