“The beauty of flowers is...that their only project is their own growth ~ to grow, live and die. They are, simply, there ~ yet almost as a superfluous phenomenon in the midst of a complex world. And, while all flowers are different”, they carry within them a universal resemblence; “the monumental within the minimal..”. Poul Erik Tojner, 'The Flower as Image'
My courtyard studio is always filled with flowers in all seasons ~ from bud to bloom; from seed to bare winter stems. They are drawn at every stage as they grow and fade, and then hang in bunches drying into beautifully tinted memories of themselves. I love the formality and precision of their design and magnificent variety. They inspire drawings that are graphic, strong and sharp ~ decorative, perhaps, but not sentimental.
