Sketchbooks

I have carried sketchbooks with me on my travels around the world for almost half a century. Big or small, they are always there in my bag along with pens, ink, a twist of salt (or a packet of cafe sugar), a candle ~ and sometimes a few tubes of gouache or watercolour. It takes only the most basic drawing kit to record the world in all its richness and variety. I especially like soft, heavy paper folded again and again to make a concertina which then fits back into its own slipcase. I now devote one book to each subject, following the landscape, cityscape or seascape through a series of linked drawings done in situ: exploring both the "where" and the "now" of the experiences...
